本片主人公（爱米尔·强宁斯EmilJannings饰）是一所大旅馆的看门人，一直以来他都为这份体面的工作感到自豪。当他下班后穿着神气的制服，回到自己所居住的贫民区时，邻居们都会向他投来羡慕的眼光。新一天开始了，如常上班的他却被告知老板要辞退他，因为他年纪太大了。但念在他工作多年的份上，老板把他调去打扫厕所，还要收回他的金边制服。他一下子从神气十足的看门人变成了低三下四的厕所清洁工。不能接受这个事实的他，夜里潜入旅馆把制服偷了回来。他穿着制服去参加侄女的婚礼，没有把被调职一事告诉亲朋好友。很快，他的秘密被别人知道了，大家纷纷嘲笑他。他再也没有颜面去面对别人了，于是跑回旅馆归还了制服，失魂落魄地坐在厕所中。然而故事并没有就此结束……影片改编自果戈里的小说《外套》。

By 1820, Edmund Kean is the most admired Shakespearan actor. But if his art is peerless, his free lifestyle is ill thought of, particularly by the high society. Kean has fallen passionately in love with Countess Elena de Koefeld, the wife of the ambassador of Denmark. Elena loves him too but hesitates to give up her rank in society and follow Kean. On the other hand, Anna, a rich heiress who refuses to marry Lord Mewill, the husband chosen by her parents, confesses her love for Kean and decides to become an actress like him... The aristocrats, outraged by Edmund's profligate ways, decide to boycott his performances and his career is broken. Kean does not recover from such a blow and, on a stormy night, dies in Elena's arms.

Though Delluc's career was short-lived, it burst vigorously(7 films in 4 years)that it forever left its imprint on french cinema history, and they rightly honoured him by giving the annual Prix Delluc to the best French film of the year. He was responsible for the creation of influential cinema  journals like Le Journal du Ciné-Club and Cinéa, founding numerous film societies, writing countless articles and coining the term cineaste. Delluc believed that films should be set in the natural without elaborate posturing, and characters should be portrayed in an intimate way where the past and present, illusion and reality can be correlated, all considered to be avant-garde at its time. He died only a few weeks after the shooting of The Flood at the age of 33.

　　影片的第一个镜头是几个充气的气囊；接着是穿着短裙的芭蕾舞女演员，然后是歌剧院广场的前景和拳击手挥舞剧院的动作。歌剧院广场，一个达达派艺术家在沉思，要烧掉歌剧院。于是，火柴划着了。拳击手挥起双拳再一次向大歌剧院打去。庙宇的立柱。在高楼的平顶上，达达派艺术家曼·雷伊和画家杜尚正在下棋。突然，喷射而来的水搅乱了棋局。女舞蹈演员的舞步。女人的脸和水母的眼。一颗鸟蛋在喷泉吐出的水柱中蹦跳。芭蕾舞团的主要演员扮成罗尔猎人出现在屋顶上。他瞄准鸟蛋。蛋仿佛在水柱中起舞。开枪。蛋壳破裂。一只白鸽破壳而出。达达派画家端着猎枪。瞄准、射击，猎人应声跌落。一辆由骆驼拖曳的灵车载着死者的棺木，缓缓驶在巴黎的郊区大路上。灵柩上放着饼干花环，送葬者挂着哀恸的神情。灵车越走越快，终于狂奔起来。跟在车后的绅士、太太们疯狂追赶。最后，灵车撞到墙上，棺木掀翻，死者穿着魔术师的装束，从棺木里爬出。他挥动魔杖。追来的人群立即消失，他又点了一下自己的胸口，他也倏忽同隐去。
