本片背景系第二次世界大战初期。芬兰与俄国对战，约有70000儿童被送往中立国瑞典，等待和平后回国。故事中的小男童，因为被送到另一国家，演变出自己有两个妈妈、两个家，但又不知那个才是自己真正的家。然而自己拒绝接受新家庭，每天等待亲母的信。及后亲生母的另一段情、养母初时对自己的不接纳……直到养母对小男童的了解、照顾，男童对养母的感情亦视为亲母。无奈战争结束，男童需回芬兰，再次与妈妈分离……
据芬兰史料记载，二次大战期间，曾有7万多名芬兰儿童被送往中立的邻国瑞典，以躲避战祸。战后，这些孩子大部分陆续回到芬兰，但有近1.5万留在了瑞典，继续同养父母生活在一起。
该片导演克劳斯•哈罗表示，很长时间以来，他一直想拍一部讲述芬兰战时儿童移民故事的电影。
