少林寺乃江湖武术宗师所在地，清朝政府欲统一天下，视少林为大患，设法去铲除它。
清政府藉天地会首脑陈近南藏身少林寺，趁机派大量官兵及高手消灭少林，寺内僧人四散，少林寺毁于火海。至善禅师自焚之前，嘱咐俗家弟子洪熙官及方世玉一定要重建少林寺。
洪、方二人访寻昔日同门胡惠乾，欲暗杀少林叛徒高进忠以报仇，惜事败，世玉被白眉所伤，幸获两广总督曾必正之女曾玉媛所救。方、媛并暗订终生。
